HOMAS, HICKS AND DAVIES SCOOP AWARDS

At a very successful presentation evening held at the club’s Richmond Park Community Centre defender Chris Thomas was named as the club’s player of the year and Tim Hicks took the Supporter’s Player of the Season Award. The award for Clubman of the Year went to Kieran Davies, one of the club’s young coaches, for his outstanding work with the club’s Academy.

Carmarthen Town’s Head of Youth Emlyn Schiavone was quick to praise his young coach. “Kieran is a committed, enthusiastic and forward thinking coach. He has worked hard to identify and recruit some of the better players in West Wales. Kieran has a very good rapport with the youngsters at the club and is currently undertaking his UEFA C licence. He’s a credit to himself and the club". Davies is currently a Sports science student at Coleg Sir Gâr.

With Tim Hicks named the fans’ favourite manager Deryn Brace praised his front man for his all round contribution to the squad during the season. “The award is richly deserved as Tim has had a fantastic season all round and developed really well”.

“In all honesty he struggled a bit in pre season but all of a sudden it came right for him and he didn’t look back. Without his play and his goals - and Danny Thomas’ goals, we would really be in the mire. He has an obvious honesty about him and relishes the challenge. He’s a player that never gives up and the supporters saw that and appreciate it. I’m pleased for him”.

FOWLER, HUGHES & THOMAS MOVE ON

Following a move that will see Paul Fowler and Craig Hughes ply their trade at the Gnoll next season Town Chairman Gareth O Jones told 'Y Dre ar Y We',

“We are disappointed to see both Paul and Craig leave the club. Paul Fowler has been an influential feature of Town’s midfield since he signed from Bridgend Street . He quickly got to grips with the Welsh Premier League and enjoyed European football with the club. His strong and skilful play was a joy to watch and his never-say-die attitude clearly influenced his fellow players. It was very pleasing that he received international recognition whilst at Richmond Park.

Jones added, “Although Craig did not have a prolific season goal wise he was a very influential player within the squad but due to injuries at the start of the season he was unable to contribute as he would have wanted to the team. I am sure that he will regain his goal scoring form but hopefully not against Town!

“I’d like to thank both the players for their professionalism while in discussions with Neath FC and best wishes for the future”.

Manager Deryn Brace added, “In all fairness this is a move that both players felt, at this stage of their careers, they could not turn down. Obviously it’s disappointing to lose three big assets but it does set up a challenge for those coming in.

Having won the Club’s Player of the Year Award defender Chris Thomas has also made a decision to move away from Richmond to neighbouring Llanelli AFC. Brace said, “Chris has decided to leave Carmarthen for the second time as he felt that he had a better chance of playing at a higher standard by moving to Llanelli. Yes we are sorry to see him go but we wish him well for the future.

CARMARTHEN TOWN 0 RHYL FC 1

Matthew Williams' first half strike was enough to give the Champions all three points. With Andrew Pearson picking up on Craig Hancock's header back inside the mid fielder played in Williams who turned his marker before firing just inside the post on 28 minutes.

Earlier Town looked vulnerable as they conceded several early free kicks in dangerous positions. And with Mark Connolly, Williams and Tyrone Kirk testing Town's resolve it took a great clearing header from Dale Griffiths to keep the Champions out.

On the 20 minute mark Greg Strong's wayward pack pass was just salvaged off the line by his keeper and as Town gathered momentum Nicky Palmer, Sacha Walters and Craig Hughes had an impact.

With Town pressing it needed a last ditch tackle from Phil Ojapah to deny Walters and minutes later it took a full length save from Jack Cudworth to preserve Rhyl's advantage at half time.

Following the break Town made more of an impression. Ojapah cleared his line after Town had hit the underside of the bar. And with Town competing Williams' petulant kick on Griffiths went unpunished. But as Rhyl broke at speed it took a point blank save from Neil Thomas to keep out Connolly and keep Town in contention.

Paul Fowler replaced Palmer ten minutes into the half and the sub's header off a Tim Hicks delivery went narrowly over. Following the hour Rhyl penned Town in with their movement and pace. Nathan Cotterrall replaced Craig Hancock and with Town regaining momentum a deft cross from Walters caused problems before Fowler sent his angled finish straight at the keeper.

Following a long stoppage Cotterrall recovered well to send in a teasing cross that just bobbled away from the well placed Thomas with Walters hooking the loose ball over.

Then having defended in strength to hold out Town's late push Kirk's late strike following a dazling break glanced off the base of the post as the visitors saw out five minutes of injury time to claim the vital points and leave Town empty handed.

Manager Deryn Brace told Y Dre ar Y We, " We didn't deserve anything from tonight as they controlled most of the game and we didn't show enough fight. They were stronger. I'm very disappointed.

Town: N Thomas, R Hughes, C Hanford, N Smothers, D Griffiths, C Thomas, D Thomas , S Walters, T Hicks, C Hughes, N Palmer Subs: D Brace, N Cotterall, P Fowler.

Rhyl: J Cudworth, M Naylor, S Dowling, G Strong, P Ojapah, J Leah, C Williams, A Pearson, M Connolly, M Williams, T Kirk Subs: G Owen, J Dixon, S Heenan, P Pritchard Referee: Wayne Stephens.

Town v Rhyl FC...
BOTH SIDES NEED TO WIN - BRACE

With Carmarthen Town having gained a Domestic License on Friday, a pre-requisite for next season's restructured Welsh Premiership, manager Deryn Brace will be keen to ensure that his squad gets into a qualifying top ten placing with a win against Champions Rhyl at Richmond Park on Tuesday night.

Brace is expecting an exciting and entertaining game. “I think it will be an exciting encounter between two sides that have to win. We have to get into the top ten and they have to win to if they want to make top three.

“Neither side is over defensive and I think it will be entertaining. I saw them play against Haverfordwest at the weekend and we saw the Jackal and Hyde of Rhyl. In the first half they were poor but in the second they showed that they can score at will.

Brace is confident that mid fielder Paul Fowler will be available having come through training at the weekend without any reaction. “I don’t think it will be a tense affair on Tuesday night I think it will be a case of two sides going at it hammer and tongs”, he added.

KO @ Richmond Park is at 7.30 pm.

TOWN AWARDED DOMESTIC & UEFA CLUB LICENCE

Carmarthen Town has been awarded a Domestic and UEFA club licence. An independent panel meeting on Friday awarded eight Welsh Premier clubs the FAW Domestic Club Licence. Nine clubs have been awarded a UEFA licence.

Club Chairman Jeff Thomas felt it ws a credit to all the successful clubs. "The gaining of a Domestic Licence and an UEFA Licence is a credit to all of the successful clubs and testimony to the sides who are, in the main, conducted by volunteers, whose service to Welsh Football, not just to their own clubs should not be underestimated.

It is now hoped that the FAW will not just continue but also enhance their financial support for the Welsh Premier League. Carmarthen Town would also wish to place on record their sincere thanks to the FAW Licensing team for their professionalism during the whole process."

The Domestic licence is a a pre-requisite for next season's restructured Welsh Premiership but clubs also have to qualify on sporting merit through their League position. It is imperative therefore that Town gets into a top ten position in order to qualify for next season's WPL.

Domestic licences have been awarded to Aberystwyth Town, Carmarthen Town, Haverfordwest County, Llanelli, Neath, Newtown, Prestatyn Town and The New Saints.

05.04.10 LLANELLI AFC 1 CARMARTHEN TOWN 0

Town were unable to reverse their recent record at Stebonheath Park when a late goal from Rhys Griffiths gave the hosts all three points. Griffiths netted the game's only goal, his 20th of the season, seven minutes from time.

With both sides having created chances Town looked to have battled their way to a deserved point before Griffiths pounced after Jordan Fellows had hooked a clearance from keeper Craig Morris on to Craig Moses for the front man to beat Neil Thomas at the near post.

The result will be a disappointment for Town boss Deryn Brace following a positive performance. Craig Hughes was denied by Morris following a Sacha Walters cross and when Nicky Palmer won posession Hughes sent his finish straight at the keeper.

Moses and Jason Bowen both came close for the Reds. Dale Griffiths made a crucial goal line clearance for Town and a Chris Thomas tackle and a Thomas save kept out the Reds' front man. But with Walters losing out in a one-on-one with Morris Town missed a great opportunity before Griffiths once again sealed the result in favour of the title chasing Reds.

The Old Gold remain in eleventh place, two points adrift of tenth-placed Airbus UK Broughton, who have played one game less. Town are also just one point ahead of West Wales rivals Haverfordwest who now have a game in hand over the Richmond Park outfit.

Llanelli AFC: C Morris, L Jarman, A Legg, C Venables, S Jones, W Thomas, J Bowen (J Follows 77'), A Corbisiero (C Jones 53'), R Griffiths, C Holloway, C Moses Subs not used: Andrew Mumford, Ryan Batley (y), Declan John (y)

Town: N Thomas, R Hughes, C Hanford (N Cotterall 66'), N Smothers, D Griffiths, C Thomas, D Thomas (D Brace 82'), S Walters, T Hicks, C Hughes, N Palmer (M Pritchard 74') Referee: Dean John

20.03.10 BANGOR CITY 3 CARMARTHEN TOWN 2

In an all action affair goals from Lee Hunt, Sion Edwards and Jamie Reed gave the hosts a comfortable first half lead. But with Town having reduced the deficit through Sacha Walters just before the break an outstanding second half performance saw Town stage a gutsy comeback.

Tim Hicks headed home a second goal on the hour and the hosts survived a confident Town penalty shout with ten minutes remaining. But the Citizens were indebted to keeper Paul Smith who made a string of fine saves in a hectic last half hour to see out the game.

Despite Town having the better of the opening exchanges Bangor struck first when Nicky Ward broke down the left and his low cross across goal was missed by the Town defence for Hunt to have the simplest of tap-ins at the back post on sixteen minutes.

Neil Thomas tipped Hunt’s effort round the upright after Eddie Jebb had provided well from the right before Bangor extended the lead eight minutes later. With Town pressing and Craig Hughes' header denied by Smith Bangor broke with pace and Hunt beat the cover before crossing in behind the defence for Edwards to finish.

Twice Town had looked like scoring and twice the hosts had broken well to finish clinically and control the game. But in truth it was Town's dismal defensive display that allowed the hosts to capitalise. Four minutes later it could well have been three nil when Edwards shot against the bar and with the ball rebounding down and then out he somehow put the follow-up over.

Following the let-off Town retained a fair share of posession as Paul Fowler’s stinging strike was blocked by the keeper and minutes later Smith held Hughes’ shot well.

Bangor looked to have put the game beyond Town with eight minutes of the half remaining when Reed picked up Peter Hoy's long throw and having turned his marker finished brilliantly by lobbing the keeper from eighteen yards. Thomas did well to deny Edwards a second before Walters reduced the arrears a minute before the break after Nathan Cotterrall had outpaced the cover down the left.

Whatever Manager Deryn Brace said at half time had the desired effect and looking to redress the balance he substituted Mark Pritchard for Dyfan Pierce. With Cotterrall dropping to left back the sub had an immediate impact on the left and Town looked revitalised.

Reed continued to cause problems when he put one raking effort beyond the far post and a second was cleared off the line by the covering Craig Hanford.

Town were then rewarded for their considerable endeavour when a Pritchard flag kick was headed on by Fowler for Hicks to finish at the back post a minute after the hour.

With twenty minutes remaining Thomas made point blank saves from Reed and then Hunt before Walters pick-pocketed the Citizens' defence to send his effort inches beyond the far post with the keeper committed.

Hicks was bundled over from behind in the box but referee Lee Evans waved play on. Then in a frantic finale Town forced a series of corners only to be denied by Smith who produced a fine double save from Walters and then Hicks.

With Town throwing everything forward it was the keeper again who denied Town a deserved share of the spoils with a superb triple save denying Pritchard’s header, Hughes’ follow up and a rebound off one of his own defenders.

Having surrendered an impressive away record Town remain in eleventh with a game in hand and now face a vital week when they entertain tenth placed Bala Town on Tuesday night and twelfth placed Newtown at the weekend.

A TESTING TIME FOR TOWN

Currently just outside a crucial top ten placing Town’s aspirations of a Super Twelve league position will be put to the test this week when they take on tenth placed Bala Town on Tuesday night and thirteenth placed Newtown AFC on Saturday at Richmond Park.

These will be decisive games and it is vital that Town gain valuable points from both encounters and it would be a fitting time for Town to notch up their 100th. home win in the WPL.

The Robins, like Town, have struggled a little this season but recent results have seen the mid Wales outfit make ground and are currently only four points behind Town in the table. Bala have drawn their last three encounters and are now without a win in five outings.

Manager Deryn Brace does not underestimate the importance of the task and knows that his side has to deliver. “This week is probably the biggest week in the club’s current history. With all the big games we’ve had in cup finals, European games and major league games. These next two games are as big as any in the club’s history. The players will have to respond to that responsibility”.

“Obviously we’ve got to regroup. We have to stick together and one dismal performance away from home shouldn’t change our beliefs. We have to get over it and we’ll look at a formation with the challenge that Bala and Newtown will give us. We’ll be making changes but we’ll set out a side that will secure us victory”.

Brace made an appeal for Town fans to turn up in numbers to support his squad at this critical time. “Yes we will give it everything but we need the fans to get behind the team and give us their support. It’s an important time and I’d like to think the fans will be there to encourage the boys and give them that vital lift to secure the points we need. I hope there is a caldron of noise there on Tuesday night and Saturday. I know it will spark a reaction”.

IT WILL BE A TOUGH TEST AT ABER'
- BRACE

Following the long New Year lay-off Town's management team arranged a friendly against Welsh League side Newcastle Emlyn on Tuesday night in preparation for Friday's away trip to Park Avenue.

Manager Deryn Brace was pleased that his squad had some useful game time. "It was a really good work out. We played three sessions and everybody had a good hour of game time. It's the second session we've had in the last few days and it will give the lads some confidence ahead of Friday night's game. Aber are doing well and they will be looking to retain their top three position. It's going to be a really tough test for us.

Town's squad has been bolstered by the arrival of Wales U23 semi pro international Sean Cronin. With the on-loan defender likely to make his Town debut at the weekend and with Nicky Palmer now fully fit following injury Brace will have a full squad at his disposal with Craig Hanford the only doubt.

KO at Park Avenue is @ 7.30 pm.

TOWN LOOKING FOR NEW SIGNINGS

Carmarthen Town Football Club is keen to make new signings during the January transfer window as it shapes up for one of the biggest challenges in its history.

Next season, qualification for the new league structure will see clubs faced with the possibility of 10 extra fixtures as the Welsh Premier League streamlines to just 12 teams with current plans for clubs to play each other four times.

With Town determined to be one of the top flight teams it will make a big difference to the workload of the club's staff, all of whom - from the groundsman to the chairman and his executive committee - are volunteers.

The appeal from the club therefore is that you might not be a speedy winger, a bustling centre forward or an agile shot-stopping keeper but you could still play for the 'team' by giving up a few hours a week as a volunteer at Richmond Park.

Chairman Jeff Thomas (above) said: "People think the work starts and ends with a 90-minute game on a Saturday. But that couldn't be further from the truth. We are a community club based in the heart of Carmarthen and the first team is really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we do.

"This new-look league is a whole new ball game which is why we are very keen to recruit more volunteers to the cause.

"We are not looking for heroes - although heroes will be warmly welcomed! - but we do need several new 'signings' to help us take the club forward.

"There's plenty of work to do, says Jeff, helping to run the academy teams for youngsters of all ages, the Ladies' team, the reserves as well as the first team. There is also lots of painting and maintenance, paperwork and promotion work to be done; and the club needs more stewards, programme sellers, ticket sellers and ball boys.

But, he emphasised, volunteers can do as little or as much as they can manage and they will not get bogged down in committee meetings and red tape.

Added Jeff: "Whatever you are good at or fancy having a go at, why not just pitch in and help."

If you are interested in 'signing' for Carmarthen Town contact Jeff Thomas on 07813697774 or the club secretary Gareth O Jones at garethojones@hotmail.com

CARMARTHEN TOWN v HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY - OFF

With Richmond Park still covered under a blanket of snow Friday night's League clash with near neighbours Haverfordwest County has been postponed.

With the surface still under 2-3 inches of snow and the walkways around the ground in a hazardous condition the ground was inspected on Thursday evening and referee Phil Jones deemed the pitch unplayable.

Earlier club secretary Gareth Jones had told 'Y Dre ar Y We', "The ground is still completely covered under a couple of inches of snow. There is no grass visible, parts are still frozen and some of the walkways around the ground are deceptively dangerous.

"There is currently a freezing mist around the ground. With no sun to thaw the surface and with the temperatures close to freezing today and tonight there is very little prospect that the pitch will be playable for tomorrow night's game".

TOWN v THE NEW SAINTS OFF

This was the scene at Richmond Park on Thursday. With the pitch under a blanket of thick frozen snow and with sub zero temperatures forecast, Saturday’s game against league leaders The New Saints has been postponed.

As requested by the Welsh Premier league the pitch was inspected on Thursday afternoon by a local referee who deemed the ground unplayable due to the 3 to 4 inches of snow and the frozen surface underneath.

Club secretary Gareth O Jones told ‘Y Dre ar Y We’. “We have been in contact with League secretary John Deakin , TNS and with match referee Kevin Parry who are all aware of the situation here in Carmarthen.

“I took a look at Richmond late this afternoon with referee Phil Jones. With the extensive snow covering and a frozen surface underneath the pitch is unplayable. It is impossible for the game to be played on Saturday. Photos...

22.12.09 SWANSEA CITY FRIENDLY CANCELLED

Weather permitting Brace was to hoping to stage a friendly game against a Swansea City squad at Richmond Park on Wednesday night. However with the ground still frozen the game has been cancelled. Brace told 'Y Dre ar Y We',

“I really wanted to get a game on this week. We needed the workout because we missed last Saturday’s game and it was a case of getting some match practice ahead of the holiday programme".

“I'd planned on giving everybody an hour. Swansea had agreed to play three 30-minute sessions. What I didn't want to do was go into playing a full time outfit not having played for a week. But once again the weather has beaten us and we have had to cancel the arrangements".

12.12.09 MATTIE'S BACK IN TOWN!

Deryn Brace has appointed former Town favourite Mattie Davies as his assistant manager. Mattie first joined Town in 04-05 and played at various times through until 07-08 when he left for Ton Pentre. A favourite with both the fans and players Mattie was a member of Town's European squad in Finland.

Mattie joins Town from Welsh League outfit Aberaman Athletic. Having been a member of last season's championship winning side Mattie took over the managerial reins this season. In a statement the club said, " Mattie goes with our blessing and we thank him for his contribution to the club over the past two seasons both as a player in the championship winning team of last season and as manager this season, he has done the club and himself proud and Carmarthen have got a good guy and a great prospect in the management team".

Town manager Deryn Brace welcomed Mattie to the club.

“Mattie will give us fresh impetus. He’s infectious in everything he does. He loves football and he knows Welsh football inside out. Having spoken to him he’s jumped at the opportunity of coming on board and he’s relishing the challenge that we’re squaring up to at the moment.

“Yes Mattie’s fresh into this side of things but he’s managed Aberaman for the last six months. He took over at a difficult time and done a fantastic job there; so he’s has that experience. I’m sure any manager will say that they don’t know everything so we’ll be a team and we’re looking forward to working with one another.

Davies told 'Y Dre ar Y We':

“Town is a big club and having played at Richmond and got to know the committee and fans it’s a wonderful opportunity to be a part of Carmarthen Town for the rest of the season and hopefully into the future.

“With Deryn it will be an opportunity to bounce and share ideas. I definitely feel I have some fresh ideas to bring to the squad and hopefully we’ll see ourselves moving up the league table. They’re a quality bunch of boys, a nice bunch of boys, all very good players and I’d like to think we can improve a lot on the position we are in currently.

“Off the pitch its really a case of trying to bring some togetherness, camaraderie, bit of team spirit and get the boys playing for each other. I can appreciate that Deryn did not want to rush into any rash decisions after Mark's ’s departure. But I think it goes without saying that any club in the Welsh Premier needs a management team and like I said I’m really glad that Deryn’s given me the opportunity and I think we can work really well together.

BALA TOWN 1 CARMARTHEN TOWN 3

Three first half goals saw Town get back to winning ways at Maes Tegid after Ross Jeffries had opened the scoring for the hosts on four minutes, heading in unopposed at the back post from an Osian Jones flag kick.

Having been rocked by the early opener Town were back level on sixteen minutes when Tim Hicks glanced in Chris Thomas' cross from the edge of the 18 yard area. The front man then bagged his brace to put Town ahead ten minutes later. Richard Hughes' floated ball forward picked out Mark Pritchard who released Hicks to drive in from an angle.

With Ross and Brett Jeffries linking well Mark Dodds looked to shackle John Toner. But having taken the lead Town took control as Chris Thomas broke down the flank. With Danny Thomas pulling his namesake's cross down well in the box he turned and fired beyond keeper Leon Bimpson to make it 3-1 at the break.

The second half saw the hosts press to reduce the deficit. But with Town's back four in miserly mood it took a saving cover clearance from Steve Fisher at the other end to deny Hicks a hat-trick after Paul Fowler had set the front man free. Fowler then came close from a Cotterrall lay off and on the eighty minute mark, with Bimpson committed and way out of his area, Nathan Cotterrall's speculative effort from the half way line went narrowly wide of the open goal.

In between Town closed the hosts down well with some tight passing and marking to register a deserved win that sees the Richmond Park outfit maintain ninth place and put some daylight between them and the hosts.

Manager Deryn Brace was delighted that his players had reacted positively following last week's result.

"Today was a fantastic reaction to last week’s shocking result. It was a hard fought victory but a thoroughly deserved victory. The payers have answered the questions I've asked with another big performance".

"Yes we got off to the worst possible start but again our reaction from that was really positive and at the other end I thought we were ruthless in taking our chances well".

"It was important to get our defensive duties right. Neil Thomas was as solid as he has been over the last couple of months. But I thought that the back four, for the first time in a complete ninety minutes, played as a real unit which gave us the basis to attack".

"Today's result was vital. It was important to get the points to close the gap between the top eight because now we're now breathing down their necks. But what we need to do is make sure we go on a positive run of wins".

Bala : Bimpson, Harris, Fisher, Powell, B Jefferies, R Jefferies, Roberts, Moore, Toner (Griffiths 70'), Duckett, O Jones (Fisher 81'). Sub not used: Kennedy.

Town : N Thomas, R Hughes, Hanford, Smothers, Dodds, C Thomas, D Thomas (Palmer 81'), Hicks, Fowler, Pritchard (C Hughes 68'), Cotterrall (Morris 87').

14.11.09 NEWTOWN v TOWN - We can not be sloppy...

Town manager Deryn Brace has warned that if Town give away posession against the Robins they will be punished. “With the Robins it certainly won’t be easy. Darren’s got them playing some great football up there and I speak to him quite often and they don’t think they’ve had the rub of the green or that they’re getting the results that their play deserves.

“So we have to set our stall out well and not be sloppy like we were last week and obviously keep the ball off them which doubles up from the Bangor game when we were great on the ball but we were also careless in giving the ball away to often. Now if we’re going to do that against a footballing side then they will punish us".

Brace will be pleased to have Sacha Walters back in contention following injury and physio Gary Morris is hopeful that Craig Hughes will start some light trainin shortly. The striker has spoken of his frustration at being sidelined for so long. He told Y Dre ar Y We, "The most frustrating thing about not playing is watching and being injured. At least we're having a run in the league that’s the main thing. I’m happy that we're showing some form but there is no other positive".

"At the moment all I can do is weights. I always look after myself and I’ve always done weight training. I think the problem was that I was trying to rush back. I might have played when I shouldn't have and it developed from acute tendonitis so I couldn't stretch it and I've just had to rest it but I've been having some new shock wave treatment".

Last season in a five goal first half flurry Town came from behind twice before netting a winner and maintaining the narrow 3-2 advantage through a goalless second half. KO at Latham Park is at 2.30 pm.

DERYN - 'WE MUST BE STRONG'

Town manager Deryn Brace has told his players to be strong ahead of Friday's Welsh Cup clash with Llanelli. Brace admits his players face a tough task at Stebonheath against a Llanelli side who have been in fine form in the Welsh Premier League in recent weeks. Whilst the Reds will go into the tie as favourites Town have showed improved form of late and will be looking to extend their unbeaten sequence to seven matches.

"Obviously it is a huge game, a huge task," said Brace. "Llanelli are clearly one of the favourites for the cup and the league as they have been for the last few years.

"The draw hasn't been kind to us in drawing us away to them but we go there with a bit more hope than maybe six weeks ago.

"We'll look at it, we'll prepare well and we'll give it our very best shot. Physically we have to be strong against them. If we're not going to turn up physically and defend set-pieces and their other plays then there is no point in turning up at all.

"But the main thing is that we're there by merit, we have a really genuine chance of beating them and we have to go there in with full belief that we can take them on."

In last season's Welsh Cup campaign the Reds lost out 2-1 at the fourth-round stage to Port Talbot. Carmarthen then defeated the Steelmen at Richmond Park in a nail-biting penalty shootout before losing out to Aberystwyth Town in a contentious semi-final tie.

Town last met the Reds in the Welsh Cup in the 2007 semi-finals when a Kaid Mohamed strike took Town through to the final which they won 3-2 against Afan Lido.

KO at Stebonheath Park is at 7.30 pm.

10.09 Haverfordwest U19 2 Carmarthen Town U19 2

Taking a little time to settle Town's youngsters were punished in the 20th min. when a break from the half way line saw the hosts beat keeper James Dickson with a low drive. But Town began to build some momentum with Elliot Thomas and debutant Gareth Thomas imposing their presence in the vital midfield area with some clever, sharp passing and crisp tackling .

Town levelled in the 35th min. Thomas dispatching a spot kick with ease. But minutes into the second period found themselves in arrears again after hesitancy in Town's defence saw the young Bluebirds chest home a long diagonal ball.

Following the set back Town's defence tightened up their act. With Joe Morgan, Stuart Mahoney, Ben Soal and Mathew Jones keeping a vice like grip on any of the home forays Owen James and Callum Deadman added pace down the flanks to stretch the Bluebirds as Town pushed to level once more.

Then, with Elliot Thomas orchestrating, the pressure eventually paid dividends. Following a series of first time passes Mathew May turned sharply before drilling home from 10 yards to bring the visitors level. Despite great efforts from Olly Ardelino, May and Thomas a winner remained elusive and with the home keeper in defiant mood he produced a stunning last minute save to turn over Owen James' goal-bound shot.

SACHA'S TON
Sacha Walters made his 100th. league start for Town at the Recreation Ground in Caersws on Saturday. Of the current squad only Nathan Cotterrall & Mark Dodds have made more appearances with 144 & 120 starts apiece.

Also closing in on the 100 mark are Neil Thomas (96) Neil Smothers (94) & Paul Fowler (92). Danny Thomas, the club's top scorer, is now only two strikes short of the 50 league goal mark.

MARK AIZLEWOOD RESIGNS AS TOWN COACH

Due to increasing business commitments Mark Aizlewood has resigned as Carmarthen Town’s coach. Aizlewood has been an influential figure at Richmond Park over recent years that has seen Town win the League Cup, Welsh Cup and make ten appearances in European competition.

Carmarthen Town Chairman Jeff Thomas told 'Y Dre ar Y We', “Mark’s resignation will undoubtedly be met with great disappointment within the club. Whilst it was not totally unexpected given his intense business commitments you sometimes tend to think that the unthinkable will not happen”.

“However it has and Mark has left a legacy that he can be proud of. We have an excellent squad which I’m confident will do well this season and Mark has been part of a process over the past five years which has led to the club’s unprecedented success in terms of winning the League Cup, the Welsh Cup, ten European appearances and last season a great top four finish in the League”.

“He has also driven forward many community initiatives, which has heightened our credibility within the town and surrounding districts culminating in the recent opening of our state of the art community centre. There is little more that can be said about the man’s talent and contribution to Carmarthen Town football club”.

Aizlewood outlined that his increasing commitments to his expanding business that provides vocational courses to the education sector had necessitated his resignation. “I have been at the club for over five years and given that I live two hours away the commitment of travelling two or three times a week has been a big burden. Whilst I was happy to do that for five years the business that I’ve recently started has turned into a multi million pound concern and I unfortunately just do not have the time to devote to Carmarthen Town to do the job to the best of my ability. I didn’t want to be in a position where my commitment, my attitude, my application to the club was anything less than a hundred per cent”.

“Five years ago when I was at a very low ebb in my life Carmarthen Town football club was fantastic to me. The people connected with the club from top to bottom have been absolutely wonderful. It’s not for me to say, but perhaps in that period of time I would like to think that I’ve also been OK for Carmarthen”.

“Maybe some people will say that the time to have done it was at the end of last season but I wanted to guide the club through pre-season. I wanted to oversee with Deryn the signing of some quality players to ensure that when I did leave the continuity in the short term would be there.

"When you look at it logically and look at everything after five years at the football club there was never really going to be a right time to leave. Last season we finished fourth which, in the current climate, is absolutely the best achievement, even inluding the European games, I’ve had as a coach because you're up against some big budgets".

“So its nothing to do with results its purely because as a professional I have the ultimate respect for Jeff and the club but my work commitments dictated that I'm not able to do the job to the best of my ability and I didn’t want to short change anybody”.

“As I’ve said people at Carmarthen have been wonderful to me through some very difficult times in my personal life hopefully I’ve been OK for the club and its been a good partnership. I’m just glad its ended on an amicable, friendly, lovely note. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time at Richmond Park and hopefully there is a legacy there. Maybe its time for somebody else to take that forward on and off the field”
.

Town manager Deryn Brace who has worked closely with Aizlewood over the last two years has great respect for his coaching colleague.

"Aize has been a huge part of what we do here at the club and obviously its going to be strange without him especially his reliability. Not only is his knowledge second to none his commitment and his standards are exemplary .

"Obviously it is a loss but what we have to do is carry on the quality work Aize has put in place. We will not be going in a different direction because its unnecessary. What we need to do carry it on and build on it".

"On a personal level Aize’s honesty comes without saying. The two years that I’ve had working along side him has opened my eyes as to how to prepare, implement and do a lot of things within the game. I’d go as far as to say that it has been my biggest advantage in football to work alongside Mark Aizlewood. It’s been quite an astonishing experience".

Chairman Jeff Thomas outlined that Mark Aizlewood will not be completely lost to Carmarthen Town as he will continue as the club’s Academy director and will always be on hand for advice on a range of matters within the club.

NEWPORT COUNTY 3 CARMARTHEN TOWN 2

After a lacklustre first half display Town showed more purpose and cohesion following Mark Aizlewood's half time team talk to reduce the deficit and get some reward for their second half endeavours. Sam Foley's angled lobbed shot gave Thomas no chance on the ten minute mark and his spot kick after being fouled Mark Dodds quickly doubled County's advantage.

Keeper Neil Thomas was in good form making a string of first half saves and Dodds made some amends early in the second period when he showed good control to beat keeper Glyn Thompson. Thomas denied Foley his second spot kick but the advantage was extended a minute later when the front man's flag kick was headed in by young Josh Hartrick to make it 3-1.

Both sides made a raft of changes and Nicky Palmer headed home on 85 minutes to add some deserved respectability to the scoreline. Asked how pre-season was progressing Manager Deryn Brace told 'Y Dre ar Y We',

“Very quickly. In all fairness it’s gone OK. It hasn’t gone as 100% as you would like it - when everything goes your way and the performances are top notch. But that’s the whole point of pre season. Some people need a bit of time to find their fitness, their touch, their form. But gradually over the four weeks we’ve been back there’s been steady progress which is good”.

CARMARTHEN TOWN 2 SWANSEA CITY XI 1

In an entertaining game both sides played attractive open football. With Swansea fielding mainly youngsters three of Town's new signings, Steve Williams, Craig Hanford and Sam O'Sullivan made their debut in Town colours.

After Danny Thomas had lobbed the ball wide and Craig Hughes had come close on a couple of occasions Town finally opened their account on eleven minutes with Hughes finally finding the net. But with both sides showing plenty of pace and movement Lee Lucas for the Swans came close to an equaliser before Danny Thomas' effort was ruled off-side.

Just before the half hour Town added a second. O'Sullivan getting a debut goal when he forced the ball over the line following a neat one-two with Danny Thomas. But Town were soon pegged back by Anthony Finselbach who's sweetly struck free kick from the edge of the box on 33 minutes left Town with only a slim advantage at the break.

Tony Pennock brought on all his changes following the break but Swansea maintained their momentum well as the game continued to ebb and flow. Deryn Brace made his changes at regular intervals with Richard Lewis and Huw Sexton also making their debuts. Ben Morris made an immediate impact when he came on with a strong run and strike that keeper Rhys Wilson kept out with a superb flying save.

In the end it was probably Town's strength and experience that proved the difference but an excellent first workout with Saturday's game against Newport County a different proposition.

Town: N Thomas, Williams, Hanford, Palmer, Dodds, C Thomas, Walters, Fowler, Hughes, O'Sulliavan Subs: Roberts, Lewis, Hicks, Morris, Sexton.

Nicky Palmer Carmarthen Town Player of the YearPALMER NAMED TOP PLAYER
Nicky Palmer was named Carmarthen Town player of the year at an awards evening held recently at the Boars Head Hotel. The highly rated mid-fielder has been influential this season and his energy and tenacity in the middle of the park has been a hallmark of his game. Having been sidelined with a broken leg the previous season Palmer’s return to fitness saw the mid fielder make 28 starts for Town and significantly Palmer also contributed five League goals to Town's tally.

Rising star Jamie Horwood was named Young Player of the Year. Horwood made nine appearances for Town during the season and significantly he displayed his stature in the first team structure with two goals for the Old Gold.

Other award winners were Richard Walley (Reserve Team player of the Year), Elliot Thomas ( Youth Team Player of the Year), Aimee Davies (Ladies Player of the Year). Clubman of the Year Award went to Pam Davies for her outstanding work for Town's

TOWN SECURE SIGNINGS AND SPONSORSHIP

In securing a number of new signings Town has also secured the sponsorship of Carmarthenshire Tyre Services as the club’s home shirt sponsor. And with Town having retained the vast majority of the squad that delivered a fourth place finish to last season’s campaign the Richmond Park outfit has signalled the ambition to move forward with five quality signings to challenge the dominance of this year's top three sides for League honours.

Pulling on Town’s new Carmarthenshire Tyre Services embossed shirt this season will be former Merthyr quartet Jamie Rewbury, Sam O’Sullivan, Steve Williams & Mike Jones. With Town also securing the signature of former Port Talbot & Haverfordwest defender Craig Hanford coach Mark Aizlewood told 'Y Dre ar Y We' “ We have some very good players at the football club and as a squad we finished in fourth. It’s certainly the best achievement since I have been at the club. That’s why we had no intention to release anybody. We have to keep developing and going forward but we have to do that without a massive benefactor".

"To progress we need to pick up an extra six, seven or eight point. So what we have tried to do is bring in a different kind of player that will give us different options at different times and hopefully secure the points we need”.

Rewbury is a former Swans scholar who has been capped at schoolboy and U17 level and had a season at Llanelli AFC before returning to Merthyr in 2005-06 and will add height to the Town defence. O’Sullivan is a former Newport County winger who, having made his Exiles debut at the age of 16, made 152 appearances for County before switching to the Martyrs in 2008.

Williams on being released by Cardiff City in 2003 joined Newport County and having made regular outings for the Exiles the defender returned to his hometown Merthyr in the summer of 2004. Mike Jones progressed through the Martyrs Youth system and at over six foot plus can prove a handful. Alongside the former Merthyr based signings Craig Hanford is a former Port Talbot youth player who played for the ‘Steelmen’ in their inaugural season in the Welsh Premier. A Wales U23 cap he spent last season at Haverfordwest County.

Carmarthen Town U19's 1 Afan Lido U19's 0

Town emerged victorious with a deserved victory in this third league and cup encounter with the Aberafon based outfit. With a victory each and Town fielding a team that included 8 players that had played the previous day the Richmond Park youngsters deserved their plaudits as they produced a performance of great resilience and character.

A determined run and 15 yard rasping shot from Jamie Horwood on 35 minutes proved the only goal of the game and Coach Jason Murphy was delighted with the win. ' Yes delighted with this win which hopefully will go towards us securing the runners up spot, we are certainly moving in the right direction as far as performance, consistency and player development is concerned .

Carmarthen Town U19's 5 Briton Ferry U19's 1
Town's youngsters completed the double over bottom placed Ferry with a resounding midweek win, the highlight of which was a well taken hat-trick by Mathew May. A Matthew Jones header on ten minutes opened the scoring before May fired in his threesome. but Ferry did reduce the deficit on 75 minutes before Angelo Dragone put the finish on an excellent result for Town with a low, bottom corner drive ten minutes from time.

TOWN KEEPER SIGNS FOR THE IMPS

Town's U19's goalkeeper Keri Andrews has been signed by Football League Two outfit Lincoln City. Andrews, who is seen here being congratulated by the manager Jason Murphy, has been awarded a two year contract by the Sincil Bank outfit.

City have arguably one of the most successful youth academies in the lower leagues of English football and the move is yet another success for Town's Academy / Youth development structure.

Keri played an important part in this this year's very promising Under 19 squad and the club wishes him all the very best and will be keeping a keen eye on his progress. Congratulations Keri.

Craig Hughes, Paul Fowler & Neil Thomas extend their current agreements with Carmarthen Town
HUGHES, FOWLER & THOMAS COMMIT TO TOWN

Town manager Deryn Brace has moved to make three key signings. With Craig Hughes , Paul Fowler and Neil Thomas (pictured left) all putting pen to paper the trio extend their current agreements with the club. All three have been influential for the Richmond Park outfit this season and with Town achieving a 62 point season total Brace felt that it was key to his plans to extend the agreement with the trio.

He told ' Y Dre ar Y We', “The key is that the three signings we’ve made are existing players. We need to keep our existing players if we are going to get better and possibly add to them. The problem you have when you are successful is that clubs want your players and they will come in for them. In saying that I would like to possibly bring at least two fresh faces maybe three at most into the club”

TOWN AWARDED UEFA LICENCE

Town is one of seven Principality Welsh Premier League clubs who were granted an FAW UEFA Club Licence at the annual First Instance Body Meeting, which was held in Cardiff on Thursday. The other successful applicants were Aberystwyth Town, Bangor City, Llanelli AFC, Port Talbot Town, Rhyl FC and The New Saints.

The Licence is a pre-requisite for clubs who wish to play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League next season and the criteria that the clubs must meet is a minimum requirement for all clubs in Europe who are hoping to gain a Champions League or Europa League spot. Therefore, Town has had to go through the same process as the likes of Barcelona, Man. Utd and Bayern Munich and it's a credit to the club that they we have met the same requirements that are demanded of those European giants.

FAW Club Licensing Officer Andrew Howard said, "I'm delighted for the seven clubs concerned and in particular the individuals at those clubs, who have dedicated so much time and effort towards achieving this. Without going through the process yourself, it's impossible to comprehend how much commitment and diligence is required."

Jamie Horwood secured Town's win against Bangor CityTOWN YOUTH THROUGH TO FIRST TIME SEMIS
Carmarthen Town 4 Bangor City 2

Town youngsters secured a deserved win against Bangor City on Sunday to progress to a historic first time appearance in the semi final stages of the competition.

Bangor settled the earliest catching a somewhat flat footed home side on the hop with a series of early raids on the home goal. Town keeper Alex Evans was kept busy producing three excellent early saves to deny the visitors an opener with the dangerous Aaron Richmond prominent down the left.

As the home defence settled Dorian Davies, Steffan James and Huw Sexton began to tighten their grip on the Bangor front men and with the Town claiming the vital mid-field area Elliot Thomas and Alec Squires were prominent in breaking up the Bangor's build up, supplying their own front men with improved possession.

Following a series of corners Town took the lead on the half hour mark with Callum Deadman's floated curling corner kick deflected past Gareth Sharp in Bangor's goal. And with the break approaching Mathew May was unlucky not to put Town further ahead when he saw two fine efforts cleared off the line. With Angelo Dragone providing for Jamie Horwood the front man put his angled header inches wide of the goal.

With the wind at their backs Town went on to dominate the second half for long periods extending the  lead in the 55th minute when captain Davies force home a corner from close range to make it 2-0.

Bangor, to their credit, fought back and from a set piece reduced the deficit when powerful centre half Luke Roberts headed home from eight yards.

With twenty minutes remaining Horwood caused problems when he chased a through ball and was upended in the box by Sharp. With Thomas slotting home a sweetly taken spot kick Town restored the two goal advantage before Bangor again pegged back the deficit. Mathew Seargent's curving effort from 20 yards finding the net.

But it was Horwood that secured the victory when his flashing header flew past Sharp to secure Town’s first ever appearance in the Welsh Youth Cup Semi Final.

Bangor coach Richard Sharp was complementary. "Town deserved the win after bossing the game for long periods. On this display they should have nothing to fear from any of the remaining teams".

Town's coach Jason Murphy said, "I’m both delighted and proud of the team. The win deservedly reflects the hard work and skill that this team possesses".

Town: A Evans, D Davies (C), H Sexton, A Squires, N Upton, S James, M May, E Thomas, J Horwood, A Dragone, C Deadman. Subs: O Hewitt-Fisher, L Jones, M Jones.

A BIG THANKS TO GARY MORRIS

Having spent a couple of nights in Glangwili Hospital at the weekend Bangor City striker Chris Sharpe was discharged on Monday and driven home by his farther Graeme.

Bangor's 'Citizens Choice' website expressed the club's gratitude, "It must be said that everyone connected with Bangor City are extremely grateful for the help and compassion shown by the players and officials of Carmarthen Town.  A message conveying these thanks has been sent to the West Wales club by a Bangor Official today. Good luck to Carmarthen Town for the rest of the season".

In particular the North Wales club was extremely thankful for the assistance of Town physio Gary Morris. Bangor City official Gwynfor Jones said;"We would also like to thank Carmarthen Physio Gary Morris for his excellent medical assistance at the pitch side." This is not the first time that Gary has shown himself to be a true professional and Carmarthen Town is extremely fortunate to have someone with such dedication, quality and expertise on the touch-line.

WE HAVE TO BE ON TOP OF OUR GAME - BRACE

Deryn Brace tells 'Y Dre ar Y We' that his side will have to be at the top of their game to beat Bangor City on Saturday.

The current Welsh Cup holders are on a good run and recently knocked league leaders Rhyl out of the Welsh Cup. On Tuesday night the Citizens scored a narrow win over Tomi Morgan’s Porthmadog and are now two points ahead of Town in fourth position having played one game more.

The Citizens have a potent strike force, with Chris Sharpe currently the league's second highest scorer with 19 goals and Les Davies with nine. Brace feels Nev Powell's outfit will present a considerable challenge.

"It's going to be very interesting. Obviously they've picked up form and had some good wins of late.

"There's only a couple of points between us so it's a case of both teams don't really want to lose it. They gave us a real thumping up at their place. I'd like to think that the boys want to roll their sleeves up and say 'you got us on a bad day'. Saturday will tell.

"They're a great side who are going well, but we can't fear them. We know they've got two of the best front runners in the league and the rest of the side isn't bad either.

"So all round they haven't got many, if any, weaknesses. To give them a game we're going to have to be on top of ours."

BRACE LOOKING TO OVERTURN RECORD BOOK

Town travel to Port Talbot Town on Friday night and manager Deryn Brace will be looking to put an end to a dismal run of five games without a win at the GenQuip Stadium. Earlier Brace said, " We haven’t done too well against them of late. They’ve got great pace up front and are very streetwise. They are going well under Jonah at the moment and have got some momentum going. A win is long overdue".

Town's last win at the GenQuip was in December 2002 when Wyn Thomas' speculative long range effort found the net and Ryan Nicholls also put his name on the scoresheet. Having secured a good win over TNS at the weekend Brace will be looking to maintain Town's run of form and will have a full squad at his disposal. KO at the GenQuip Stadium is at 7.30 pm.

BRACE - IT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT

The draw for the Quarter Final of the Welsh Cup sees Town welcome back former manager Mark Jones to Richmond Park as Town take on Port Talbot for a place in the semi-final of the competition. Manager Deryn Brace told 'Y Dre ar Y We'

"Obviously it’s a tough draw. We’ve got a Welsh Premier team and it will be very difficult. It could have been kinder but every club now at this stage are up for it and probably believe that they can win it".

"Importantly we’re at home.  Yes we’ve shown what we can do away from home against the New Saints but a home draw is what you want, is all you look for really. We’ve just got to make sure mentally and physically that we prepare ourselves correctly and then its all about the game".

Brace was wary of the fact that Town has not always done well against the Steelmen. "The warning signs are there for us. We haven’t done too well against them of late. They’ve got great pace up front which we are aware of and they are going well under Jonah at the moment. But a month is a long time, things can happen. So we will approach it as we have done all our games - one at a time, week by week.

And will the return of Town's former manager be a factor? "No I don’t think so. It adds a little spice to the game and to the outcome but I expect everyone to approach it in the right manner as they have done all the games.

The tie will be played on the weekend of 27th. / 28th. February 2009.

Damon Searle has moved to Barry TownDAMON DEPARTS

Damon Searle has moved to his home town team Barry Town. Having been unable to command a place in Deryn Brace's squad since returning from early season injury the ex Bluebird and Wales U21 international has linked up with the Welsh League Division 1 outfit.

BRACE - WE'VE GOT NOTHING TO LOSE

Town boss Deryn Brace insists his side must be fully switched on if they are to overcome The New Saints in the Welsh Cup on Saturday. Having bagged 21 points out of the last 24 on offer Brace believes only the best will do against the formidable challenge posed by Saints. He told 'Y Dre ar Y We'.

"The cup game is a one-off. Some say that they are having an indifferent season but we'd still like to be having their season. They are third in the league, still in the cup like ourselves and we certainly can't underestimate them".

"They may not be doing as well as over the last few years but they are still up there challenging and drawing them is probably the draw that no one wanted. But we have got to look forward to it rather than worry about it. We have to set our stall out, believe in what we're doing and go there and enjoy it as much as possible."

Town will be boosted by Saturday's 3-1 win at Connah's Quay. "We're believing in one another, we're working for one another and at the moment we have got players who are on top of their game," added Brace. "We will go into it probably as underdogs so we've got nothing to lose."

TOMO BACK IN OLD GOLD

Deryn Brace has signed five times capped Wales Semi Pro International Kris Thomas. The versitile defender left Richmond Park for Forest Green Rovers at the end of last season and having already gained International Clearance from the FA Thomas will be available for the trip to GAP Connah's Quay on Saturday.

A member of Tony Pennock's Wales Semi Professional Squad in the 2007 Tournament held in Inverness Kris was again selected in 2008. He is also a former Welsh Under-18 international and was a member of Town's Welsh Cup Winning side and Town's UEFA Cup line-ups against Scandinavian giants Tempera United (Finland) and SK Brann (Norway). To date Kris has scored 14 goals from his 192 league starts.

HUGHES SWITCHES OLD GOLD
COLOURS ...

Town Manager Deryn Brace has moved quickly to secure the signature of Craig Hughes from Newport County. Brace, who has been anxious to avoid a repeat of last January's dip in form, feels that Hughes will give Town’s strike force an added dimension. He told ' Y Dre ar Y We',

“I think that everybody appreciates that our finishing hasn’t been a strong point this season. Whilst we cannot say that the signing of Craig Hughes is going to put all that right we can say is that hopefully he is going to be part of the answer. I hope Craig will give us that little bit of something else. I think that is something that excites me. We have a bit of variety in our centre forwards, they are all of them a little bit different to one other. Craig’s presence will add to the competition and give us an edge”.

Town coach Mark Aizlewood agreed. “His experience and proven goal scoring record at our level will be a big asset. I think that it’s a credit to us and the people around the football club that when a player of his calibre becomes available that he’s happy to join us”.

Its expected that the experienced front man will add some firepower to Town’s forward line as they look to maintain the push for an European placing. Selected by Tony Pennock for the 2007 Four Nations Tournament in Scotland, Hughes played in two matches, against the hosts and then England. A favourite with the Newport County fans Hughes will be remembered as the man who scored the only goal against Llanelli last season when the Exiles won the last FAW Premier Cup Final.

NEATH FC v CARMARTHEN TOWN - GAME OFF

Given the much milder conditions Neath officials were hopeful that the game would go ahead as scheduled on Friday night. However, having taken a look at the pitch around 12.30 pm it was decided that there would be a pitch inspection by referee Mark Whitby at 17.00 pm. Unfortunately the Gnoll surface was deemed unplayable. provisional date Tuesday 24th. March 2009.

BRACE - WE MUST BE FOCUSED ...

Town will be at full strength on Friday night when they travel the short distance down the M4 to Neath FC. With new signing Craig Hughes an added dimension Brace is pleased to have a full squad at his disposal.

“Yes we should be picking from a full strength squad.
Stuart Roberts has had a chest infection and probably would have been doubtful for last Saturday’s game had we played. But with the extra few days rest he came through training OK on Wednesday night".

But Brace has warned his side that they must be focused following the enforced layoff “This time last season we started to fade. We had a very poor festive period and early January which cost us on the run in for a European place. We need to make sure we don’t do that again.

“We must be focused. We will need to be strong. Neath are fighting for their lives down at the bottom and a lot of people will say that they are in a position which they shouldn’t really be in. They are a very hard working side with skilful players and I’m sure that they will be looking to the New Year with optimism to change their fortunes around".

LOSS OF FESTIVE FOOTBALL HITS HARD ...

The lack of festive football has been a great disappointment and placed an added burden on clubs to rearrange fixtures and redress the financial loss of what is traditionally a very lucrative time. Town Chairman Jeff Thomas outlined the difficulties caused by the loss of the holiday fixture programme. “Yes it was a perfect opportunity lost. The coaching and playing staff were really up for it to make amends for the Boxing Day loss to Llanelli and were anticipating a successful New Year period to consolidate our European challenge”.

“However, due to the freezing weather, that was not to be and with the postponement of two lucrative games against Llanelli and Haverfordwest there is a significant loss in income through sponsorship and gate money and we will face many difficulties and challenges in the new year to make good the financial loss and rearrange the busy fixture schedule.

“I just hope our supporters will help us in this regard and really make an effort in the New Year to keep the turnstiles turning and fill Richmond to cheer their side on”

BRACE - WE NEED TO KEEP FOCUSED IN THE NEW YEAR

Having won five games on the bounce Town manager Deryn Brace is looking to maintain momentum over the busy holiday period. He told 'Y Dre ar Y We',

"We need to make sure that when we come out in the New Year we’re still in the mix. We need to make sure that we take as many points as possible to keep us in the hunt".

It’s that old cliché again - every game is important, every game is vital and every point is crucial. The games over the holiday come in quick succession so obviously we need a fit, injury free, suspension free squad. At the moment we’ve got a few players picking up niggles but it’s that time of the season".

Brace will be bolstered by the fact that defender Liam Hancock came through a reserve team outing last Saturday unscathed . "It's great that Liam has got a full ninety minutes under his belt. The condidtions were quite difficult but the important thing is that he's ready and in contention.

Brace is expecting a tough encounter at Stebonheath on Boxing Day and expects his squad to remain focused. “The players have to handle the pressure of each game being vital and important; we can’t be beaten like that. We need to become hardened, a bit more streetwise, we need to do what the top clubs do if we want to become one of them. We need to keep as focused as we have been over the last five weeks".

KO at Stebonheath on Friday is @ the earlier time of 11.00 am.

Ben Morris

Ben’s a Game Boy

There is a lot of hidden talent amongst Town’s squad but none more so than Town’s young midfielder Ben Morris who recently returned from the World Cyber Games in Cologne Germany with a Silver Medal.

Ben, a student at Aberystwyth University, is one of Town’s emerging talents and was one of 800 competitors representing 80 countries who took part in the prestigious global tournament. His current chosen game is Project Gotham Racing 4 (PGR4), an arcade racing game on the Xbox 360 console, and he is currently the UK National Champion.

Presented with the Silver Medal and a cheque for $5,000 (look out Tomo will find something to fine) Ben will now look forward to next year’s competition in the city of Chengdu, China. But before that there is the European Championship in February to deal with and the small matter of a tough Welsh Premier programme to crack on with. Well done Ben.

ULSTERMAN IN CHARGE AT RICHMOND

Town's Welsh Premier League match with Rhyl on Saturday 18th October 2008 will be refereed by Trevor Moutray of Northern Ireland. The North East Ulster whistler is the latest official to take charge of a League game in Wales as part of the Referee Exchange scheme. Mr. Moutray, who is from Dundonald near Belfast, is also the Secretary of the North East Ulster Referees Association.

WELSH CUP - PWLLHELI v CARMARTHEN TOWN

Town will travel to Welsh Alliance League outfit Pwllheli FC in the 3rd. Round of this year's Welsh Cup competition. Pwllheli, who are the only Welsh Alliance League club still in the competition, progressed to the third round courtesy of a 2-0 away win at Llandidno Junction. The tie will be played at Pwllheli's Recreation Ground on Saturday 1st. November 2008. KO 2.00 pm.

The North Wales outfit is something of an unknown quantity for Town Coach Mark Aizlewood. He told 'Y Dre ar Y We', “I don’t know a great deal about Pwllheli at the moment. But by the time kick off comes we will have had a comprehensive match report on them.

“Sometimes at League of Wales level you cannot always get a scouting report on the opposition. When you’re playing one off cup matches, where if you loose you have to wait 12 months to put it right, you have to do your homework and we will”.

“By the time we come to play Pwllheli we will have a comprehensive dossier on them and we will give them the utmost respect. But we will go there expecting to win, which is my attitude to every game. I don’t particularly worry about the opposition a great deal because we have a group of players who, on the day, can beat anybody.

DERYN BRACED FOR QUAY TEST

Town manager Deryn Brace is relishing the challenge of hosting third-placed Gap Connah's Quay at Richmond Park on Saturday. The Deeside-based outfit have enjoyed a good start to the season with nine points from twelve. A 2-0 win at Port Talbot at the weekend leaves the North Wales outfit third in the league, with Town manager Brace looking to maintain his sides league momentum going.

He told 'Y Dre ar Y We' "The first five or six games in the league is a case of results,'' said Brace. "That is the most important thing. After a few games you can start to look at other things. "We've done okay so far, but it's about getting those results, keeping the momentum going and that's what we'll be looking to do against Connah's Quay.

"They have been revitalised with the takeover and they look a totally different proposition to what they were at the end of April and May. They've got themselves off to a good start."

Town will need to stifle a recent goal-scoring surge from Quay midfielder Forde who has netted three goals from four appearances.

And with Hudgell, Coombes and Roberts making the starting lineup on Tuesday night and the returning Jamal Easter also available Brace will have a near full squad at his disposal. There are some doubts however over defender Damon Searle, following a knock against Neath, and wing man Nathan Cotterrrall who was substituted at half time against Aberystwyth.

Kick-off at Richmond Park is at 2.30pm.

JAMAL BACK AT RICHMOND

Striker Jamal Easter who was has been released by Newport County just a month after arriving at Spytty Park has returned to Town. Last season Jamal netted nine goals from 23 (+6) Welsh Premier appearances and will give manager Deryn Brace added options up front.

Exiles' boss Dean Holdsworth said ."Jamal leaving frees up a bit more money and I hope we can get another signing completed this week. He did well, but Chris Hartland has done well and deserves a chance,"

Over the summer Easter attracted the attention of several clubs in the Blue Square Conference and trained with Premier outfit Salisbury City in pre-season.

When he left Richmond at the end of the season, Brace said: "Jamal wants to play at the highest level possible and he's gone with our blessing. If things don't work out for him the door is always open."

In welcoming the forward back to Richmond Brace said: “In all fairness to Jamma things have, unfortunately, not worked out the way he would have liked. Obviously we are happy for him to come back”.

Brace added: “He knows the situation. We’ve started the season in pretty good form and Danny (Thomas) and Tim (Hicks) have both scored goals so obviously he won’t be walking into the team.

“He’ll have to be patient and fight his way into the side. It is a case, as Gregg and myself and maybe the lads on the bench have found, when an opportunity comes they have to be ready for it. They have to be focused and as soon as they get that opportunity it’s a case of - you’ve given me a game, I’ve done well and now you have to keep me in”. Jamal will not be available for tonight's game against Aberystwyth.

Carmarthen Town United with Trinity

Carmarthen Town is delighted to announce the merger of Carmarthen Town AFC with Carmarthen United. In a significant development Trinity College has also joined the merger and college players will now be eligible for Town, which will extend the player base.

Town’s manager Deryn Brace is delighted with the new link. “Several of last year's Under 19 players are now too old for that set up and we needed another senior team for them to continue developing their football education. Players like Keiran Davies, who came on and scored the winning goal on his first team debut last week, need to be playing regularly in order to be match fit and available for first team selection”.

“The merger will give these youngsters regular senior football. Steffan Davies, another valuable member of our squad, is a student at Trinity College and hopefully he will be able to exert his influence on his fellow footballing students.’

One of the main instigators of the merger is Sean Cresser, Deputy President of the Student Union at Trinity College. He noted, “ the link with a Welsh Premier League side will make attending Trinity College a very attractive option for aspiring footballers as it provides the opportunitiy to play at the highest class of domestic football in Wales”.

Sean will manager the Carmarthen Town Reserve side which will play in the First Division of the Carmarthenshire League. He is keen to develop and extend his coaching team and is looking for coaches who wish to join him and be part of this new exciting set-up. He also wishes to appoint an assistant manager / player who will have a specific role during match days.

Carmarthen Town football club will also provide wider coaching responsibilities and experiences leading to higher coaching qualifications for any interested parties. For those who are interested please contact either Sean Cresser on 07967 293040 or Nigel Williams on 07870 622729.

Executive Chairman of Carmarthen Town Football Club Jeff Thomas was very pleased with the outcome of the negotiations. “Along with our Academy set-up we now have a more attractive proposition for the young footballers in the area. There will be an opportunity for them to continue to play for Carmarthen Town as they mature which will, eventually, lead to more players from the area playing in the Welsh Premier League.

TOWN SIGN STUART ROBERTS

Town manager Deryn Brace has secured the signature of forward / winger Stuart Roberts. The Carmarthen born player made his Swansea City debut as an 18 year old before making a £100,000-plus move Wycombe in October 2001. He returned to the Swans on a free transfer in February 2004 and spent time at Forest Green Rovers before signing for Aberystwyth Town where he spent three seasons. A Wales Under-21 international he is a nephew of Wyndham Evans former Carmarthen Town Manager and Swansea City stalwart.

ROVERS TARGET THOMAS

Forest Green Rovers' website reports that Rovers boss Jim Harvey has offered non-contract terms to a quartet of players including Town defender Chris Thomas.

Thomas, who has been targeted by Rovers to fill a right back vacancy, took part in their recent win over Wycombe Wanderers and came on for the second half of Rovers' friendly against Birmingham City at the New Lawn on Sunday.

Recent signings for the Nailsworth club include former Town forward Kaid Mohamed, following his recent release by Swindon, and Curtis McDonald who left Town to play for Polish outfit MK Swit last autumn.

Thomas who has made 192 Welsh Premier appearances was selected for the 2008 Semi Professional Tournament in North Wales where he played in all three games adding to the two caps he received the previous season. 26.06.08 TOWN FETE & FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

Town is gearing itself up for the club’s tenth Fete and Football Tournament with competitions at U9 and U11 for boys and a primary aged competition for girls.

Tournament organiser Emlyn Schiavone is delighted with the response. He told ' Y Dre ar Y We' “The response to the schools competition has been very positive. It has in fact exceeded the numbers we had planned for.  The level for support we’ve had is really encouraging. It will be an outstanding day.

Town manager Deryn Brace, who played a number of Town's youngsters during last season, believes that it will be a showcase of football talent. “Competitions like this are an open door for talent and hopefully some of that talent will come through the system to senior football. It all has to start somewhere and there is no better place or time than in the tournament on Saturday.

Admission to the event is via St Peters Car Park and Priory Street Car Park from 10.00 am onwards.

TOWN PRE SEASON GETS UNDER WAY

Carmarthen Town will travel to Llanelli on Friday evening (27.06.08) to take on Welsh Premier Champions Llanelli AFC at Bryngwyn School. Town’s first friendly fixture will provide manager Deryn Brace’s squad with an opportunity to brush away the cobwebs and provide the Reds with some game time in their build up to Europe with the Champion’s League draw being made in Nyon on Friday.

Brace is happy with the way that Town’s pre season is progressing. He told 'Y Dre ar Y We', “Friday’s game for us is an opportunity to brush away a few cobwebs. Training has actually gone well. We’ve had three sessions together and the boys have worked really hard. Llanelli will obviously be a little bit more advanced than us but we expect that with their forthcoming European games coming up."

And Brace is happy to give the Champions a helping hand in their build up to the European campaign. “We want the Welsh clubs to do as well as possible and hopefully when we get into Europe again sides will come forward and give us the same option. I did the same a couple of years ago for Carmarthen when I was at Haverfordwest and I’m happy to help Peter on Friday."

“You have to remember that at the same time it gives us a very strong friendly. I don’t think there is any harm in playing other Welsh Premier outfits in pre season."

Together with the four Welsh nominees for UEFA Club competition, Llanelli, TNS, Bangor and Rhyl the Richmond Park club, Aberystwyth and Welshpool have all met stringent UEFA criteria and have been granted a UEFA Club licence.

The most challenging criteria for clubs to achieve has been within the Financial section as well as the introduction of Player Medicals, where all players have had to undergo an Echocardiogram, ECG and Annual Medical.

Club secretary GO Jones said: "Carmarthen Town Football Club is very proud to be awarded the prestigious UEFA Licence again this year. Despite not qualifying for European competition the licence will still allow European games to be played at Richmond Park."

"Credit must be given to Jeff Thomas the Executive Chairman of Carmarthen Town Football and also to Club Treasurer Nigel Williams for all their hard work in securing this licence. It demonstrates Town's commitment to continual improvement both on and off the field", he added.

TOWN YOUNGSTERS CREATE HISTORY
Carmarthen Town U16 Squad Cup and League Winners 07-08

Carmarthen Town u 16s team completed a very succesful 2007/8 season by winning the League and Cup double. They defeated Ammanford u16's in the D.L.Williams Memorial cup on Wednesday 23rd April by 4 - 1. Following a tight first half Town dominated the second half to emerge worthy winners.

On Saturday 26th April Town's youngsters played the final home league  game of the season with a 3-1 win over Garden Village which meant they were undefeated in the League this season scoring  91 goals with only 13 against.

19.04.08 Reflectingeason Manager Deryn Brace told 'Y Dre ar Y We',

“They always say the League table never lies and I think that’s probably right. Over the season we are short of a few of the clubs that are above us and obviously there is some work to be done."

"We all feel t progress is being made. The squad is a lot younger. We’ve won more games, scored more goals, conceded less but we still make basic errors. That, we’ll work on."

"The main thing is the squad knows where they went wrong and we need to use this experience to hold us in good stead."
"A lot of players have played their first season in senior football and
they are now relishing a second season".

19.04.08 CONNAH'S QUAY NOMADS v CARMARTHEN TOWN

Town manager Deryn Brace, who played a full ninety minutes in Town's stalemate with Porthmadog, is looking for his players to produce a final flourish and round off the season on a positive note next Saturday.

“It’s not a case of going to Connah's Quay with nothing really to play for except three extra points and seeing the season out. Those three points are vital to us and will determine, depending on other results also, whether we finish 4th. 5th. 6th. or even 7th.

“Position is important. It gives people confidence and a boost. I want us to go to Connah's Quay and produce a more ponce. I’m looking for players to see the season through in a positive way”.
