PORT TALBOT ATHLETIC 0 CARMARTHEN TOWN 2

TOWN started the game very brightly and looked to be well in control. Parker had an early shot on goal and Dean Rossiter unleashed a screamer that skimmed over the bar on 20'.

When Parker was put through on the keeper ten minutes later with Ryan Nicholls completely unmarked in front of the open goal Town should have converted their dominance of the game into goals. Parker elected to take on the keeper rather than squaring the ball for Nicholls to tap in. Scantlebury did well to block the shot and gave his side the encouragement they needed.

Port Talbot came more into the game and Town seemed to lose their way a little. As half time approached the game seemed to disintegrate and for the five / ten minutes before the break the football was very scrappy. It remained scoreless at the break.

There was clearly something in Port Talbot's half time tea as following the break they played their best football. Cegielski had an excellent run down the left but the chance was wasted. For periods Town were made to defend in numbers. It was ironic that Port Talbot played far better in the second half but conceded two goals.

The first came from a Ryan Nicholls penalty on 51' when Port Talbot were adjudged to have handled in the box (I'm sure Tom and Paul will have their view on that decision).

The second on 66' resulted from a run by Paul Walker down the right who put in an excellent cross into the box. From my position Parker looked to have got on the end of the cross to put the ball in the back of net. Others felt it had come off one of the Port Talbot defenders. I'm sure Lawrence will give us all the benefit of a couple of slow motion replays tomorrow afternoon.

Port Talbot rallied and battled to the end of a game that saw five bookings; Rossiter & Chapple were booked for Town and Morgan Glover & Lewis for Port Talbot. In the end Town ran out deserved winners and consolidated their hold on second place in the League of Wales two points behind leaders Cwmbran but four points clear of third-placed team Aberystwyth.

A sizeable crowd with a good number of travelling supports for Town's first LoW visit to the Victoria. Derryn Brace Town's new signing came on for a few minutes at the end for his Carmarthen Town debut.

Town: Fitzgerald, Walker, Jones, Rees, O'Brien, Barnhouse, Evans, Rossiter, Nicholls, Chapple, Parker. Subs : C. Davies (Nicholls 89') McPhee (Evans 90') Brace 90' ( Jones).

Port Talbot Athletic : Scanlebury, Wiseman,Michael, Glover, Harbinson, Cegielski, Cockings (c), Morgan, Lewis, Anderson, Bartley. Subs: Gearie, Chapman, Cann (Anderson).

CARMARTHEN TOWN 9 UWIC INTER CARDIFF 1

CARMARTHEN STRIKER RYAN NICHOLLS produced a devastating finishing display to bury any hopes the Cardiff students had of gaining points at Richmond Park this afternoon. Carmarthen established a 5-0 lead as early as the 36 minute, which virtually finished the match as a contest.

Town went ahead in the 5th minute when the visiting defence failed to clear and Richard Parker was on had to drive home from close range.

The visitors continued to find themselves under incessant pressure and it came as no surprise when Town increased their lead in superb fashion on 23'. A good build up from inside the Carmarthen half resulted in Parker's final ball putting Craig Evans clear of the defence and a well placed shot into the corner of the net gave UWIC keeper Nigel Williams little chance

Williams hardly had any time to recover as within 5 minutes Dean Roster's speculative shot from 25 meters found the top corner of the net to make it three within the half hour.

Then came Ryan Nicholls' first of his four goal tally when Wayne Jones' through ball was picked up by the striker who coolly slotted the ball past Williams on 32'. Three minutes later came another Town spectacular when Craig Evans' deep corner was volleyed home powerfully on the turn by centre half Neil O'Brien from the edge of the box.

UWIC's best player Gavin Beddad scored a consolation for the visitors just before the half time whistle when Town's defence failed to clear and the striker was on hand to drive past Fitzgerald.

The second half continued in similar vein. Shaun Chapple, on loan from Newport, hit the post on 47' . Then a brace of goals by Nicholls in the 58' and 70' with first time shots gave Town an unassailable 7-1 lead. Substitute Dylan McPhee marked his first home appearance by scoring in the 89 minute and then presenting Ryan Nicholls with his 4th goal from close range in the final minute of the match.

For UWIC No 11 Beddard was clearly their best player. He held the ball up well but suffered due to lack of support. Ex Town player Carwyn Thomas who came on for Reid late in the first half also showed up well with some good runs at the Town defence.

Not surprisingly Ryan Nicholls who was 'on fire' today was nominated as sponsor John Llew Evans' Man of the Match.

Town: Fitzgerald, Walker, Jones, Rees, O'Brien, Barnhouse, Evans, Rossiter, Nicholls, Chapple, Parker. Subs : Meredith (Parker 65') McPhee (Evans 71') Williams ( Jones).

UWIC Inter Cardiff : Williams, R. Williams, Reid, Davies, Colman, Lock, Buchanan, Plant, Edwards, M. Williams, Beddard. Subs : Becket (Buchanan), Williams (Edwards), Thomas (Reid).

NEWTOWN AFC 2 CARMARTHEN TOWN 1

Newtown leap-frogged Carmarthen to go third in the League of Wales table with a fine performance at Latham Park on Tuesday evening.

The game lived up to expectations of a clash between two of the league's best quality footballing sides, with Newtown gradually gaining the upper hand after an even first period, but being made to sweat in the closing stages as Carmarthen staged a powerful late fight-back which nearly brought them a share of the points.

After Carmarthen had hit the bar early on, Newtown took the lead just before half-time, when John Cottrell's through ball found Justin Wickham inside the box and he made no mistake. It was no more than the talented winger deserved, having tortured the Carmarthen defence throughout the half.

Newtown doubled the lead on 62 minutes, Steve McCormick making a lot of ground to finish a move started by a Chris Adamson run.

Carmarthen then came back at the Robins, pulling a goal back through Richard Parker with nine minutes left, and hitting the foot of a post in the tense closing stages.

Newtown deserved to win on the night, being generally quicker to the ball and more effective in midfield. Craig Evans was voted Town's man of the match and for Newtown Taylor the centre half. Fitzgerald made one great save near the end as did the Newtown keeper from a good shot from Rossiter.

The first goal so close to half time was a severe blow to 'Town' after a balanced first half. The second was a killer. Carmarthen were attacking and a poorly taken corner and misunderstanding left Barnhouse and Rossiter completely exposed as Newtown broke quickly.

The game was played in good spirit, by two of the better footballing sides in the League. Newtown will be hard to beat at home this season.

Thanks to Dave Collins and Malcolm Williams

CARMARTHEN TOWN 1 BANGOR CITY 0 (FAW Premier Cup Group A)

A SUPERB GOALKEEPING display by former Cardiff City goalkeeper David Williams kept Bangor City in this FAW Premier Cup match. Striker Robbie Williams who was sent off by Wrexham referee Brian Bevan on 37' for in-discipline added to his team's troubles and put Bangor on the defensive for long periods during the game.

Carmarthen Town made the running from the outset and after Williams had saved comfortably from Parker on 20' a succession of corner kicks still failed to produce a goal for the home side. Williams then excelled himself with a double save. Firstly brilliantly blocking Parker's shot and then making an equally fine diving save from Siôn Meredith when he struck in the rebound.

Siôn Meredith had some good runs and on the half hour Wayne Jones' cross along the Bangor City goal line went agonisingly close with the onrushing Town players all failing to connect. At the other end keeper Fitzgerald was rarely called into action but Bangor were dangerous on the break. Fitzgerald did well to block a close range shot from Paul Roberts and almost immediately made another great save from Jamie Hughes.

Conditions deteriorated in the second half due to the persistent rain. Town still pressurised the Bangor goal. Gavin Rees came close following a corner and Town appealed for a penalty when Parker was brought down in the box on 51'.

Following a fine individual run Rossiter's powerful shot just cleared the Bangor bar whilst Nicholls went closer with a shot that hit the top of the crossbar on 65'. The deadlock was at last broken 67' when Rossiter was fouled in the penalty area and Ryan Nicholls scored from the penalty.

Given the conditions both sides produced some good, exciting football. Bangor defended gallantly and refused to drop their heads. Paul Roberts had some good runs and Comley-Excell caused Town's defence problems in the air on several occasions. Bangor's man of the match had to be David Williams in goal. In the final minutes of the match City threw everything into attack but Town held on to take the three points and record their first win the FAW Premier Cup.

Town - Fitgerald, Rees, Jones, Thomas, O'Brien, Barnhouse, Walker, Rossiter, Nicholls, Meredith, Parker. Subs ; Ian Davies Stephen Evans (Walker), S. Williams, Cerison Davies (Parker)

Bangor - Williams, Cooper, Rowlands, Williams E, Hazelden, Williams S, Williams R, Johnson, Hughes, Roberts, Comley-Excell. Subs: Cross, Lampkin, Bishop.
