Carmarthen Town 1 Barry Town 2

Carmarthen Town paid the price for gifting Barry Town two early goals despite enjoying the majority of the first half possession. Town, however, reduced the deficit in the 77th. minute with a well taken goal but despite heavy pressure in the final thirteen minutes the visiting defence held firm. Due in no small measure to the immaculate handling of keeper David Forde.

Carmarthen dominated the early proceedings but it was the visitors who took the lead after seven minutes in spectacular fashion. Lee Phillips had a great run down the right and put in an inch perfect cross to the far post for Toomey to finish with a powerful header.

Town fought back with Ryan Nicholls to the fore. His powerful 10th. minute shot was well parried by Forde but Town could not capitalise on the resulting corner.

Further on target shots were well blocked by the resolute visiting defence. Despite most of the first period being played in the Barry half  the Dragons were quick, dangerous and always threatening on the breakaway.

Shaun Chapple became the focal point of the game with two excellent strikes on goal but unfortunately he also lost possession that resulted in Barry’s second goal. He was dispossessed by Flynn in mid field who fed Toomey who once again finished well for an excellent goal.

As half time approached Town had several shots on the Barry goal but unfortunately without success - only to be indebted to Fitzgerald at the other end who saved from a dangerous Barry break on the stroke of half time.

The second half found the home defence under more pressure with the Barry stike force, masterminded by the influential Jon French from mid-field, looking dangerous. The visitors came close to increasing their lead with efforts by Flynn and Brown before substitutions by Tomi Morgan committed Town to all out attack and a thrilling final quarter.

Tomi’s tactical move paid off in the 77th. minute when Shaun Chapple produced  an excellent through ball for substitute Tim Hicks  who finished superbly with a shot that left Forde with no chance.

Town came close to gaining the equaliser two minutes later when Forde made a fine scrambling save from Nicholls. The final 10 minutes saw Carmarthen throw caution to the wind with Neil O'Brien and Wyn Thomas being pushed up into the attack but Barry’s professionalism won the day with a disciplined display and plenty of bodies in defence.

Tomi will be disappointed not to have gained at least a point from the game whilst Barry will be very pleased (and in my view and some of the Barry faithful) fortunate to have inflicted Town’s second home defeat of the season despite having to defend for long periods of the game.

Carmarthen Town 2 Wrexham 4

Full back Sion Meredith gave Town the best possible start after five minutes, when he stole in at the back post to connect with a Chris Summers cross from their left to fire into an almost open goal and give Town an early lead that shook the visitors.

The game continued at a furious pace with both sides producing some exciting football to entertain an excellent crowd of 1079. Town were matching the visitors well with Ryan Nicholls, Chris Miller and Sion Meredith posing the Wrexham defenders problems.

The Wrexham equaliser came from a free kick on the edge of the 'D' that Darren Ferguson back heeled for Steve Thomas to unleash a 20 yard shot that took a deflection off the wall to wrong foot Rob Fitzgerald in the home goal.

Play was end to end and Andy Morrell had a good run into the home box that ended with him being sandwiched between two defenders and saw him tumbling inside the box with appeals for a penalty being dismissed by Rhondda referee Paul Thomas.

A controversial decision at the other end saw the referee disallow what seemed a goal when Chris Summers’ shot hit the underside of the crossbar and cross the goal line following Kristian Rogers’ attempted punch clearance. The ball was hacked away by the Wrexham defence and play waved on by referee Thomas with appeals for a goal again dismissed by referee Thomas.

Town again came close on 38 minutes when a sweeping three-man move ended with Chris Miller’s shot being deflected off Steve Roberts for a corner. From the flag kick Summers saw his free header go about two feet over the bar with the Wrexham defence standing still.

As half time approached Wrexham’s Morrell put his head in where it hurts and Steve Roberts' shot from the rebound flew off Wyn Thomas for a corner.

Town were unfortunate not to have gone in ahead at the break. They had matched Wrexham well and had created some excellent chances.

The second half saw Trundle come on for Blackmore and with Wrexham turning up the pressure a little Lee Jones brought down Steve Thomas with a clumsy challenge in the box that HHh

ector Sam slotted home from spot kick on 53 minutes.

Town came back strongly but the killer blow came six minutes later with Town pressing for the equaliser they lost possession and Wrexham broke quickly on the left wing. Sam fed a ball through to Trundle and his cross found Waynne Phillips who finished with ease.

With the Richmond faithful a little quiet they were given a glimmer of hope when Martyn Chalk conceded a silly penalty on 73 minutes when referee Thomas adjudged that he had used his arm when chesting down a ball and Ryan Nicholls stepped up to fire his effort high to Rogers’ right, giving the keeper no chance.

Just when the home team needed a few moments breathing space to regroup, Wrexham were on the attack and within two minutes Carlos Edwards had restored the two-goal difference when he sent the Carmarthen defence the wrong way and finished from outside the box.

On 83 minutes Fitzgerald once again came to his side’s rescue with a save to deny Trinidadian international Hector Sam.

Town can be proud of their efforts tonight and even the Wrexham faithful conceded that the scoreline flattered the professionals somewhat. Once again when matched against League opposition Town have shown that they are worthy opponents for any side.

CARMARTHEN TOWN 3 NEWTOWN AFC 1

An excellent game at Richmond Park saw the weekend's third hat-trick when Chris Summers set the seal on Town's convincing victory over Newtown. With the game starting at a furious pace Carmarthen were presented with several chances in the opening minutes. Chris Miller’s close range header scraped the Newtown crossbar and Shaun Chapple’s cross into the penalty area posed considerable problems for the Newtown defence who managed to clear the danger. With further chances falling to Summers, Lee Jones and Ryan Nicholls the visiting defence were fortunate to survive an opening period as Town failed to capitalise on their early superiority.

Newtown gradually played their way into the game with Justin Wickham being a constant thorn in the side of the home defence but despite Carmarthen’s domination Newtown took the lead against the run of play when they carved out an excellent goal after 35 minutes. A strong run by Newtown captain Colin Reynolds ended with an excellent defence splitting pass to Mark Williams who drilled a low ball beyond the reach of Rob Fitzgerald in the home goal.

Town responded immediately and a good cross by the busy Lee Jones from the left saw Chris Summers’ powerful header superbly saved by Newtown keeper Mark Jones. Town kept up the pressure and just before the break when the Newtown defence failed to clear Lee Jones’ corner the ball was scrambled home by Summers on 44'. All square at half time.

The second half continued in a similar vein with Carmarthen pushing forward and dominating play. Just after the hour Siôn Meredith had a good run down the right and his deep cross beyond the far post was slotted back into the box by Lee Jones for Summers to net and give Town a deserved lead on 61 minutes.

Summers should have had his hat trick in the 71minute when, with only the keeper to beat, he put the ball wide of the post but a couple of minutes later he made amends with a typical poachers goal when Dean Johnston’s shot was parried by the Newtown keeper and Summers was on hand to bury the rebound in the back of the net.

Even though Town took their foot of the peddle a little and with all three subs coming on there were still a few late chances. The game was played in an excellent spirit underlined by the fact that there were no yellow cards issued by LoW newcomer Martin Rees who had a good game on his first appearance at Richmond Park. Mark Williams worked hard for Newtown along with Colin Reynolds at the back but Justin Wickham was busy all afternoon and the danger man for the visitors. For Town Ryan Nicholls led the line well and Dean Johnston is obviously getting back into form but it was a good all round performance.

A good crowd 427 saw an excellent start to an important week for Town and Tomi will be well pleased at the performance of his team.
