Ym marn GO sums it up...................
Gareth Jones is Head of Lower School at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myrddin. As well as being a regular supporter of Carmarthen Town AFC he is a respected 'mind' of information on sporting matters. Gareth is Chairman of the Ceredigion, Carmarthen & Pembrokeshire Schools Football Association. Each month, in his own inimitable way, he summarises League of Wales events for the Richmond Park supporters.

BETH BYNNAG SYDD YN DIGWYDD heddiw hoffwn ddiolch yn bersonol i bawb sy’n gysylltiedig â’r Clwb am yr holl bleser ‘rwyf wedi’i gael eleni. Ar ddechrau’r tymor mae gobeithion pawb yn uchel ond eleni mae Clwb Caerfyrddin wedi llwyddo i wireddu llawer o freuddwydion. Mae’r tîm yn gystadleuol ac yn medru perfformio’n gyson, nid yn achlysurol.
Although this game at Richmond today is very important there will be far more people interested in what is happening at Connah’s Quay. Personally I hope that Barry gain the necessary victory and win the League title once again. T.N.S. have performed really well lately and deserve credit for their achievements but Richard Jones has produced miracles this season with a greatly reduced squad. Dr. Andy Cale will hopefully not have bought his way to the championship.
What about the rest of the clubs? Cwmbran, even though they are through to the final of the Welsh Cup will, in my opinion, be rather disappointed with their inconsistency which meant that their initial investment this season has not paid off. Llanelli could also be rather disappointed after such a stirring start to their season but have the potential to develop into a real force next year. Aberystwyth have achieved what they deserve which is absolutely nothing.
Connah’s Quay despite their comparatively poor home form hold the key to the championship and have proved that, on their day, they are a force to be reckoned with. Newtown, today’s visitors, will definitely be disappointed with their season but will also continue to try and produce football of the highest quality. The joke club of the League, Bangor, have managed (!) to keep everybody entertained off the field. I wonder who is managing them today? Given their problems off the field their players have done really well to get to the Welsh Cup final.
Afan Lido will be rather pleased with their season after struggling at the start but they were also unlucky to lose their semi final against Bangor. Hopefully they will be able to improve their playing surface by next season. It is possible! Rhyl appear to be preparing themselves for a major challenge next season with all the correct noises and appointments by a new board. Caersws will be disappointed with their home form this season with only four wins. Flexsys Cefn Druids will be more than happy with their League position after their initial scares but away form needs to improve next season. Rhayader have also managed to avoid the drop but have gradually escaped from the bottom of the League.
It was the Haverfordwest committee who gave me the most pleasure this season with their joyous celebrations at the end of their win against Carmarthen. It gave them and their team a great boost when it was really needed. Inter Cardiff appear to be safe because even if they lose their last games they have a superior goal difference compared to Conwy. It will be interesting to see how competitive they are next season.
Conwy appear to be the ones to accompany Caernarfon back to the Cymru Alliance. I personally will miss both clubs, but especially Caernarfon because of their entertainment value. Conwy need drastic changes before they return to the League of Wales while Caernarfon will have a difficult season with every other side in that League aiming to capture their scalp.
DYNA NI FELLY, TYMOR ARALL AR BEN. Bydd prynhawn dydd Sadwrn yn ddiflas iawn dros yr ychydig fisoedd nesaf. Dim esgus i fynd o’r tþ a dim esgus am ddod adref yn hwyr! O leiaf mae gobaith bod y golygydd, sydd yn cytuno â phopeth sydd yn y golofn hon, yn mynd i gyrraedd y bar ar ddiwedd y gêm ! O.N. Neges i’r rheolwr, wps sori chwaraewr-reolwr, Tomi ‘Myrddin’ Morgan. Byddaf yn disgwyl gwell y tymor nesaf!
Y PRAWF MAWR 25/03/00
DYMA’R DIWRNOD MAWR WEDI CYRRAEDD. Pwy all anghofio’r gorfoledd ar ddiwedd y gêm yn erbyn Y Barri y tymor diwethaf? Gêm gyntaf y dewin ac ergyd Dean Rossiter yn taranu i gefn y rwyd. Felly mae heddiw yn gyfle da i fesur y gwelliant unwaith eto yn erbyn y tîm sydd unwaith eto ar frig y Gynghrair.
Barry have proven a number of people wrong this year, including myself, by playing their way to the top of the League. Even though the situation is much tighter than usual at this time of the season the team from Jenner Park are overwhelming favourites to be champions again. The only likely challengers at present are T.N.S. who are also playing well at present, but will finish as runners up. Cwmbran have too much ground to make up and are likely to finish third.
The most interesting position will be the next three. Carmarthen, Llanelli, and Aberystwyth will fill these but it is difficult to predict in what order. Carmarthen have a difficult end to the season and must produce a series of very good results to maintain their present position. Having topped the League on occasions and been in the top three for a long period, it will be very disappointing to fall below the traditional enemies from the east and north. Even though the magician has stated that a top eight position was the aim at the start of the season, anything below fourth will be rather a poor finish to what has been a very pleasing season. I hope that both Aberystwyth and Llanelli continue to play poorly away from home and that this will put paid to their chances of finishing above Carmarthen.
I have not included Connah’s Quay or Bangor in the race for the top six as Connah’s Quay have played too many games and Bangor are not good enough. Both Rhyl and Newtown have too many points to make up and are destined to finish outside the top eight. The next three clubs are Caersws, Afan Lido, and Flexsys Cefn Druids who will be happy to have avoided the relegation struggle further down the League.
It gets very interesting near the bottom of the League. Caernarfon, and before anybody else mentions it, my tip to do well this year, and even though they did beat a Swanseae City side, are down. Even their players admit it. Conwy are the favourites to accompany them but they do have a number of games in hand on their rivals. Haverfordwest must be worrying again especially with all those home draws and the lack of home goals. Rhayader are on a good run at present and the change in manager will probably save them. The only other team to face the relegation battle are Inter Cardiff but perhaps they will have the necessary contacts to ensure their survival.
MAE’R TYMOR yn dod mewn i’r cyfnod mwyaf diddorol. Mae pob pwynt yn bwysig dros ben, naill ai er mwyn sicrhau llwyddiant neu i sicrhau tymor arall yn y Gynghrair. Gobeithio bydd heddiw, yn dilyn y siom yn y Cwpan, yn hwb er mwyn sicrhau mwy o lwyddiant ar ddiwedd y tymor. Nid oes dim gwell na chwarae yn erbyn tîm da iawn.
CROESO I’R COFIS UNWAITH ETO 22/01/2000
AR DDECHRAU’R TYMOR fe wnes awgrymu bod Caernarfon yn mynd i gael tymor da eleni. Yn anffodus nid yw pethau wedi gweithio mas yn gywir - unwaith eto, medd rhai! Nid yn unig bod y canlyniadau wedi mynd yn wael ond rydym wedi colli ymddangosiad arall ar Barc Waun Dew gan y bythgofiadwy Paul Rowlands, y cymeriad â’r iaith liwgar. Rhaid canmol y clwb ar ei ddewrder am ddewis polisi newydd o ddefnyddio mwy o chwaraewyr lleol, ond mae tasg anodd o’ch blaen. Pob hwyl am weddill y tymor, hynny yw, ar ôl heddiw.
Llanelli did everybody a favour last week by defeating Barry and keeping the championship wide open. The Reds have performed admirably at home but their away form will prevent them from winning any honours this year. My tip for the championship, Cwmbran, appear to be revitalised and are scoring goals again. The home form of the top three sides must be a major factor in their success. T.N.S. have done well recently despite being well beaten by Barry.
Now that Bangor’s unbeaten run has also come to an end, perhaps someone else will be chosen as Manager of the Month for January! I was also very pleased to hear that all the Aberystwyth players have recovered from the flu. Perhaps they should also employ a club doctor as well. Connah’s Quay have continued to impress with several good results recently while Newtown’s mixed bag of a season has continued in the League.
Caersws stay out of the relegation battle with valuable points being gained lately while Flexsys Cefn Druids have made steady progress and are looking more at home in the League. Rhyl are a side with a number of problems and are becoming one of my favourites for relegation unless they manage to overturn their poor form. Inter Cardiff have done well to play their games but they also could face even more problems on the field as the season continues.
Though having enjoyed my trip to the seaside last week I must ask the League to ensure that Carmarthen play Afan Lido in August every season. I don’t think that Afan Lido will be relegated especially with the encouragement the side receives from the bench! It was a pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of the Haverfordwest committee members at the end of the game against Carmarthen. They deserve to stay up because of their enthusiasm. Their team has also done well recently - but what about winning a game at home!
Nearly at the bottom of the table are Conwy who appear to be destined to leave the League in one form or another at the end of the season. They have only played 13 games but that could make their situation even worse, especially if they continue to have problems with the pitch. Hopefully Rhayader will benefit from the problems that these other sides are facing and will be able to collect enough points to avoid relegation. Caernarfon will probably be back in the Cymru Alliance next year unless Mr. McNeil is able to borrow some of the magic from our own magician.
RWY’N DIFARU YN FAWR bo’ fi heb fynd i Raeader yr wythnos ddiwethaf i weld 'y gôl' Roedd hi’n dipyn o sioc i ddarllen bod y chwaraewr reolwr wedi sgorio gan nad wyf wedi ei weld y cael yr un cynnig ‘on target’ eleni! Dim camerâu chwaith!
PENCAMPWRIAETH Y GORLLEWIN 27/12/99
CROESO I UN O ‘ELYNION’ PENNAF Caerfyrddin yn y Gynghrair. Mae’n hen bryd i’r Dre ennill yn erbyn y Cardis am y tro cyntaf!
Barry still lead the League at the end of the year but their fine run was slowed down by Connah’s Quay last Saturday, while Cwmbran appear to have settled down once more to winning rather than drawing games. Two good wins by Carmarthen have also strengthened their position while the allegedly big spenders of T.N.S. have been gathering pace. Llanelli have continued to produce the goods at home but have been building up a backlog of fixtures away from Stebonheath. Bangor, whom I thought were a very good side when they played at Richmond Park, have continued to win their games quite comfortably. These sides appear to be pulling away from the rest of the teams.
Aberystwyth lead the mid table positions, it is their away form that has let them down. Connah’s Quay will have been very pleased with their point at Jenner Park, which further emphasises their better away form. Newtown must be rather disappointed with their season so far, their lack of fire power seemingly their problem. Inter Cardiff have been mentioned quite enough recently. Caersws have continued to gather enough points to stay out of trouble while Rhyl could be dragged into the relegation fight quite easily.
Flexsys Cefn Druids who were entertaining but rather small physically when they played Carmarthen, have also continued to produce good results at home but surprisingly have not drawn one league game so far. Conwy appear to be suffering on several fronts and will need a change in fortune to improve their position. Afan Lido will also need to benefit from an improvement in the weather in order to catch up on some of their fixtures. The bottom three places are filled by Rhayader, who most people thought would struggle, Caernarfon who were my tip to do well (before anyone reminds me) and Haverfordwest. Perhaps Haverfordwest will benefit from the signing of a few mercenaries from the South East of Wales.
The League has had a great deal of attention in the media recently with very little being positive in its nature. As someone who is not involved at club level these days, I have nothing but praise for clubs such as Carmarthen who have made certain that the area has benefited from having a side in the League of Wales. It is a pleasure to see the progress that the Club has made on the field and off the field. Perhaps it is too much money and certainly too much greed and haste that have contributed to the problems that several clubs face at present. Today’s visitors have had their difficulties but have been rescued by the hard work of certain individuals. Hopefully that hard work will not be wasted.
Bob tro mae Aberystwyth wedi bod ar Barc Waun Dew maent wedi dechrau’r gêmau ar dân a’u hennill cyn hanner amser! Gobeithio bod y dewin yn mynd i ysbrydoli ei dîm yn erbyn ei gyn-glwb. Mae’n hen bryd cael buddugoliaeth dda yn erbyn Aber ac efallai baratoi am fwy o lwyddiant!
CROESO NÔL I FANGOR - A MEIRION APPLETON! 27/11/99
PAN BENODWYD MEIRION APPLETON yn rheolwr newydd ar Fangor roedd yn tipyn o sioc. Wrth ddilyn y canlyniadau cynnar roeddwn yn amau pa mor hir fyddai ei deyrnasiad ond maent wedi troi’r gornel yn ddiweddar. Mae’n sicr bod profiad y rheolwr yn dipyn i wneud â hyn. Llongyfarchiadau i Meirion ac i’r clwb am eu llwyddiannau dros y mis diwethaf. Rwyf hefyd wedi cael cipolwg ar C’Mon Reff. Does dim byd yn gwerthu nac yn tynnu sylw yn well na rhyw osodiadau dadleuol!
Barry have regained their usual position at the top of the league following their late show against Carmarthen. Whether they can stay there is a matter of great debate these days with many noting that they have regressed but not many suggesting that they will not defend their title successfully. My tip for the title Cwmbran have lost their first league game and dropped a few unexpected points, while Carmarthen’s excellent away form seemed to desert them at Llanelli and Barry. I thought that Llanelli were superb against Carmarthen but playing on a surface like that makes the game much easier, but how will they perform on heavier pitches? Aberystwyth have continued with their fluctuating form but appear to be virtually unbeatable at home, which you are able to witness on television very often. I have a sneaking feeling that T.N.S. will be the team to watch over the next couple of months - they are strong physically and are well prepared.
Connah’s Quay are still within striking distance but need to find a few more goals at home. The most improved team in the league are Inter Cardiff who have had a very good run lately. They are the form side along with today’s visitors. Caersws continue to defy all logic with their position in the league but must be worried about their away fixture list. Newtown have gained a few good results but remain rather inconsistent. Afan Lido have also continued to pick up the necessary points to keep them above the strugglers in the league.
Rhyl have played fewer games than the rest of the teams and could rise up the table. Rhayader will be pleased with their performances over the last month but need to win rather than draw a few games. Conwy I am surprised to see near the bottom but if they cannot raise a side for a game there must be difficulties somewhere. Flexsys Cefn Druids have gained a few points here and there but do not appear to be gaining ground. The team in dire trouble which was my tip to do well this year, are Caernarfon. Following our experiences at Richmond Park last year their team talks and post match discussions must be very colourful. Haverfordwest appear to be doomed, not only are they five points behind Caenarfon but the other teams above them are picking up a few points, which they are not doing at present.
Yn mynd i wylio GÔL nawr i weld pwy sy’n chwarae pwy yn rownd nesaf y cwpan. Rwy’n sicr bydd rhywun arall yn trafod hyn yn y raglen. Yn edrych ymlaen i weld y gêm rhwng y dewin a’i hen feistr. Hefyd mae fy nghyd-gefnogwyr o’r gogledd yn edrych ymlaen at glywed acenion Bangor ar Barc Waun Dew heddiw.
T.N.S. I WYNEBU PROBLEMAU 23/10/99
Pe bai’r gêm hon yn cael ei chwarae bant o Barc Waun Dew efallai byddai fwy obaith gyda Caerfyrddin i ennill. Mae ei perfformiadau tu fas i Gaerfyrddin wedi bod yn arbennig yn enwedig wrth ystyried yr holl deithio i’r gogledd.
As I usually start with the team at the top of the league it gives me great pleasure in stating that Carmarthen have produced a series of results, especially away from home, which means that they deserve pride of place this month. No guessing my nomination for manager of the month for the last week in September and the first three weeks of October! With several of the top sides involved in the Premier cup and the League of Wales sides entering the Welsh Cup there has been little change near the top of the table.
Cwmbran have continued to grind out a number of favourable results while Barry appear to be gathering a formidable head of steam. The surprise package from Llanelli have also continued to do well. The B.B.C.‘s favourite side Aberystwyth have been very inconsistent and are in dire need of expanding their squad without becoming too reliant on the West Midlads! Conwy and Rhyl must be disappointed with their results against Carmarthen while Connah’s Quay have not overly impressed me with a series of good results.
Further south and into Mid Wales and Newtown appear to be approaching the form that I expect from this fine footballing side, while Caersws who were unfortunate to lose at Richmond last month will be difficult to overcome. T.N.S. I have always rated highly. They are always well drilled and prepared to play football as it should be played.
The ‘big’ teams from the North West do not appear to be performing to the best of their alleged ability. More about Bangor and their problems next month while Caernarfon have not flattered to deceive. They are just poor.
Flexsys Cefn Druids will be very pleased with their result against Aberystwyth but perhaps more important to them is the continued poor form of both Rhayader and Haverfordwest. These two sides must already be looking at their fixture lists in earnest and trying to work where they are going to gain their next points. The other side that appear to be in disarray are Inter Cardiff who have also, like Haverfordwest, replaced their manager. Player power was mentioned in one of the papers. Perhaps the players should put more power into their playing performances!
I must also praise the performances of the Youth team players who appeared for the schoolboy teams of Ceredigion, Caerfyrddin a Phenfro recently. Their skills and attitude are a great credit to the club and to their coaches. Fel rheolwr tîm Ysgolion Canolbarh Cymru cefais bleser mawr wrth ennill o 3 - 0 yn erbyn Ysgolion De Cymru. Roedd chwaraewyr Caerfyrddin yn amlwg iawn yn y fuddugoliaeth.
Edrych ymlaen at ysgrifennu yn Rhaglen Bangor!
Y TYMOR HYD YN HYN 25/9/99
Canlyniad arbennig o dda wythnos ddiwethaf. Mae’n amlwg bod aer y môr yn cytuno â phawb. Gobeithio bod y canlyniadau ar Barc Waun Dew yn mynd i fod cystal, gan ddechrau heddiw. Mae Caersws wastad yn dîm anodd iawn i’w chwarae, tystiolaeth o drefnu ac hyfforddi da iawn.
Ond beth sydd wedi bod yn digwydd i’r gynghrair dros y mis cyntaf? Cwmbran went to the top of the league last week following a fine win at Aberystwyth . They will be benefitting from their early start to the season and if they manage to avoid any major injuries are my tip for the title this year. Aberystwyth have also started strongly although they will be disappointed with that home defeat. Perhaps they will be far more consistent when the squad settles down.
Llanelli will be very pleased with their start to the season especially with their home form, dominated by that thrasthing of Aberystwyth. Having dropped more points than they usually do before Christmas Barry will be rather disappointed with their league position. Their so called monetary problems have been well documented elsewhere but I firmly believe that they will still win one competition this season. Afan Lido have made an excellent start to their home season but have found goals hard to find away from home.
Both Connah’s Quay and Conwy have made steady starts to the season and will be hoping to build on these foundations. The mid Wales sides occupy mid table positions with Caersws, Newtown, and T.N.S. having mixed fortune so far this year. I expect all three to make steady progress during the season with perhaps Newtown being the best of the three by the middle of May.
The other sides will be worried already. Caernarfon, whom I had expected to improve on last year, have had great difficulty in finding their opponent’s net. Inter Cardiff will be expected to improve but I am afraid that they are not as strong force as last year. Bangor appear to have major problems. Despite the appointment of the wheelin’ and dealin’ Meirion Appleton the highlight of their season so far has been the Selling of Tommy Mutton to Swansea City.
Flexsys Cefn Driuds need to find some magic potions before long or their stay in the League of Wales will be short. It could be an interesting game when the Druids come up against the Merlin of Carmarthen. Haverfordwest must be very worried having started poorly and having replaced their successful manager from last year. Rhayader having survived last year appear to be in for another long hard season.
Beth am obeithion Caefyrddin eleni? Heblaw am y gemau yn erbyn Inter Cardiff mae’r tymor wedi dechrau yn addawol. Dylai’r garfan sgorio ddigon o goliau os ddaw’r cyfleuon, y gwendid efallai yw pwy sy’n mynd i fod yn ddigon creadigol i greu’r cyfleuon. Y clybiau â’r carfannau cryfa’ sy’n llwyddo y dyddiau yma.
