UWIC INTER CARDIFF 0 CARMARTHEN TOWN 4 Carmarthen Town got back to winning ways today with a
well-taken first half hatrick by Town's new signing Chris Summers ensuring a valuable
three points for Tomi Morgan's team. With manager Morgan opting for a flat
back four formation instead of the usual wing backs and with three strikers
up front Town had somewhat of a new shape. Summers was in the thick of things as early as the second
minute when UWIC keeper Danny Embelton produced a fine save to deny Town's
striker and made another superb save five minutes later to deny the buoyant Chris Summers yet again. UWIC came more into the game and on a break up field saw a
good effort headed over. Summers however broke the deadlock on 19 minutes.
Following a long ball up field Summers held off some strong challenges and
struck a fine ball past Emberton from 12 yards to enable Town to take control
of the game. Town enjoyed the greater share of possession and in a rare
raid on the Town goal former Carmarthen player Craig Thomas did well to work
space along the by-line but his hard cross flew across the Town goal with no
one to slot the ball home. Summers increased the lead on 25 minute when the UWIC
keeper dropped a high ball that was then cleared out to the left. Ryan
Nicholls did well to lay the ball back into the box for Summers to drive past Embelton. On the half hour Rob Chester had a good chance to reduce
the arrears for the home side but his header went over the bar with keeper
Fitzgerald a spectator. Summers completed his hatrick on 33 minutes
when following a long ball from defender Neil O'Brien and some fine work by
Shaun Chapple in the penalty area Summers' shot gave the keeper no chance. Just before the break former Barry striker Gavin Beddard
forced a fine save from Fitzgerald but Town were worthy of their half time
lead and clearly in command. Following the interval the home side were rejuvenated and
refused to let themselves to beaten. They looked determined to salvage
something from the game and took the game to Carmarthen. Town could have
extended the lead just before the hour with a flowing move down the right.
Shaun Chapple flicked on a neat ball for Sion Meredith to head on but Ryan
Nicholls' final shot went just wide. Just after the hour UWIC had their best period of the
game. They retained possession well, were strong in defence and moved up the
field quickly with some good passing movements to put pressure on Carmarthen's
defence. As the game moved towards its conclusion Town regained the
initiative and Shaun Chapple's excellent performance was capped in the 87th.
minute when his quickly taken free kick caught the UWIC defence unawares and
left keeper Embleton stranded as the ball found the back of the net. Today's win takes Town back up into fourth place above
Aberystwyth and one point behind Newtown with two games in hand. Having
performed so well in the second half UWIC might reflect on their first half
performance. Referee : Neil Morgan Crowd
